Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh
Beal Atha Na Slua
Baile Fúinn Cúlra na Scoile Foireann Nuacht An Lá Scoile

Bunaíodh Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh sa bhliain 1990, le seisear daltaí. B’í Carmel Uí Fhearghail an chéad mhúinteoir agus príomhoide na scoile. An chéad seomra ranga a bhí againn ná sean siopa Gruagaire, ar ball bhogamar isteach i sean caife agus ó shin go siopa rothair.

Nuair nach raibh spás ar bith eile fágtha i gCúirt an Chumainn, bhogamar isteach ins na seomraí feistis i Halla an Bhaile. Freisin, bhí oifigí agus tuilleadh seomraí againn in iar-oifig dlíodóra. Bhí na foirgnimh sin ar fad ar chíos ag an scoil.

I gcónaí bhíodh ár bpáiste le feiceáil ag siúl na sráideanna ag dul ó rang go rang.

I Méan Fómhair 2005 bhogamar isteach in ár scoil nua i gCéide Ghearrbhaile.

Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh was founded in 1990 with just 6 children.
Carmel Uí Fhearghail was our first teacher and principal. Our first class was taught in a converted hair salon in Society Street, later on the school moved in to a former café and bike shop, and then to the town hall.

Our children were a regular sight on Society Street as they went from class to class.

In September 2005 we moved into our new school in Garbally Drive.

Éadaí scoile an tsamhraidh
Summer School Uniform 2016

Tá súil againn go mbeidh an aimsir go hálainn go luath!!!

Tá traidisiún anseo éadaí scoile an tsamhraidh a chaitheamh an tam seo den bhliain. Mar sin is iad éadaí scoile an tsamhraidh ná:

- Bríste Ghearr dúghorm.
- T-léine scoile (gorm/bán/dearg)
- Bróga Reatha
- Geansaí Scoile spóirt

Taobh amuigh de seo ba chóir go mbeadh éadaí scoile ceart ar do pháiste gach lá.

We hope that summer will soon be on the way!!

As is tradition in Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh, we can wear a summer school uniform at this time of year. Our summer school uniform consists of:

- Navy shorts
- School t-shirt (red/blue/white)
- Runners
- School tracksuit top

Please note that there is no mix and match option.

Children must wear their full school uniform or summer uniform.

Runners may be worn with summer uniforms and sports uniforms only. Black school shoes are worn with full school uniform.

Please support our school uniform policy as not doing so confuses and upsets the children, and gives the impression that our rules are there to be broken. We try to teach the children that fair rules are there for the benefit of everybody and must be respected by all for the good of society.

Bullying, Internet Safety & Cyberbullying
Workshop for Parents - Wednesday, June 3rd 2015
7.00 - 8.30 p.m. in the School Hall

Dear Parents,
We have arranged for John Wills (Education Development Executive) with Barnardos to present a Workshop on Bullying, Internet Safety & Cyberbullying to parents on Wednesday, June 3rd from 7.00pm to 8.30pm.

We feel these are very relevant topics. Bullying and cyberbullying is an ever present concern for us all. There are great benefits in using the internet but there are also many risks and we need to be aware of these risks and how we can best safeguard our children.

Earlier in the day John will talk to our 4th, 5th and 6th classes.

The evening Workshop is open to parents from all classes, as well as parents from the local area. There is no charge for attending the Workshop but we will have a donation box which will go towards covering the cost of running the event

We have been very lucky to have secured John Willis as a speaker during this school year and we hope you can come along as it promises to be a very informative and interesting evening. Please spread the word about this Workshop to any parents from outside the school who you think might be interested.
We look look forward to seeing you on the night.
Go raibh maith agat.

Parent’s Association - Minutes of March Meeting

Coiste / Parent’s Association

MINUTES OF MEETING
HELD ON THURSDAY, 19th MARCH 2015
Present: Geraldine Sheeran Renate Kohlmann Ruairi O hAnnluain Helen McCarthy

Apologies: Janice O’Grady Olivia Dunne Fiona O’Flaherty
Damien Naughton Ger Coughlan

1. Update on PA Finances

February/March: We raised €276 from the Shamrocks and thanks to everyone who supported this fund-raiser. We spent €140 on supplies for our Pancake Day which was, as always, a lovely morning and enjoyed by the children and thanks to everyone who sent in pancakes and helped out on the morning.

2. Purchase of Land
There has been no update on this since the last meeting. We are still awaiting Letter of Offer from the Council.
A Suggestion Box for fund-raising ideas to develop the land has been placed inside the school entrance doors and if anyone has any suggestions, please drop a note into the box.

3. St Patrick’s Day Mass & Parade

Thank you to all the children who took part in the Mass and Parade and to the staff for all the preparation that went into both these events. It was a lovely Mass with wonderful singing, music and drama.
We won two prizes in the Parade. Best School Entry €150 and Best Over-all Entry in the Parade €300. The prize money will be spent on a fun event for all children in the school.

4. Internet Safety Talk

Helen Burke recently spoke to Rang 5 and Rang 6 about Internet Safety which they found very informative.
It was mentioned that every home should have their own Internet Safety Rules. Some suggestions are:
• Every family should have their own set of Internet Safety Rules and discuss them so everyone is aware that the purpose of the rules are for reasons of safety.
• Every family should consider what access their children have to the internet, what sites, apps, etc., they are allowed view/use.
• Have the internet accessible in family rooms only and not in bedrooms.
• Know how to check your child’s privacy settings (and your own).
It was suggested that we might put links to various sites with information on Internet Safety on the school website.
Geraldine had been speaking to John Wills from Barnardos and he is available to give a General Internet Safety talk to the older classes during the day and then to parents in the evening.
Suggested dates were a day/evening during the week May 25th to the 29th or June 2nd or 3rd.
Ruairi and Geraldine to firm up on exact date.
Instead of charging a set fee for providing a speaker, Barnardos request that we make a contribution to Barnardos and cover the speaker’s travel costs.
It was agreed that on the night of the talk, we would have a collection box where parents can make a small donation to Barnardos, if they wish.

5. Walk a Mile for the School

It was agreed that we would run this event again this year as it was enjoyed by all who came along last year. Suggested dates were Sunday May 10th or 17th if the running track was available. Renate to check availability.
Part of the funds raised from this event would go towards a donation to Barnados for providing a speaker for our Internet Safety evening.

6. Parking at School

Once again, we would remind everyone to take care when dropping and collecting children and to drive and park safely. Do not obstruct other cars. Remind children to use the pedestrian crossing when crossing the road.

7. Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 30th 2015. Agenda Items to be forwarded to Helen at the PA e-mail address (coistenadtuisti@eircom.net) at least a week prior to the meeting.

Our parade was most colourful and happy – the children were fabulous! Our school won the prize for best school in the parade and also won the overall prize for best entry in the whole parade!! Maith sinn!!!

>>>>>>>>Sale of Work: €1,528 (Organised by Rang 6)
>>>>>>>>Hamper Raffle €2,243

In addition, from the ‘Blue Coin” collection in TESCO before Christmas, the school received €405. Thanks to TESCO and to all who supported the school.

€5,500 was spent on a new reading scheme for the school. The new scheme will be of great benefit to the children and the books are already being read and enjoyed.

2. Purchase of Land

There has been no update on this since the last meeting. We are still awaiting Letter of Offer from the council.

3. Fundraising for Development of Land

A suggestion box will be put inside the school entrance doors and any parent who has any fundraising ideas can drop a note into the box. Ruairi to organise this.
It was suggested that arranging for the Army Band to perform at a concert could be a good fundraiser. Olivia to contact the Army Band and get an idea of their availability, etc.

4. Awards Ceremony Update

Ruairi had spoken to the teachers about the ceremony, the item was discussed at our meeting and the feeling of the meeting, after discussion, was that the Awards should continue in their present format. An extra award may be added to include The Arts. Criteria for the various awards will be discussed at a later meeting.

5. Shrove Tuesday- Pancake Day

It was agreed that this event would be run again this year. Helen to send around an e-mail and note asking parents to send in pancakes and for help on the morning. Ger Sheeran offered to shop for supplies.

6. Internet Safety Talk

It was agreed that we would organise a talk on Internet Safety for Parents and hopefully run this event before the end of the current school year.
Ger Sheeran, Renate & Ruairi to look into this and research various speakers and their availability and update the next meeting.

7. Parking at School

It was noted that parking at school had once again become an issue with several recent incidents of dangerous parking /driving at school drop-off and collection. Measures were agreed to address the issue.

In addition, Helen to draft letter to parents reminding everyone not to park in the yellow box outside the entrance to the staff car park, no double parking etc.

8. Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, March 19th at 8.00pm.
Agenda Items to be forwarded to Helen at the PA e-mail address (coistenadtuisti@eircom.net) by Wednesday, March 11th.

Turas go Gearrbhaile agus Ardscoil Mhuire 20/01/15

Rang 6 visit Garbally College and Ardscoil Mhuire 20/01/15

Bhí Rang 6 ar thuras go dtí na meánscoileanna áitiúla Dé Máirt, 20/01/15. Bhuail siad le múinteoirí agus chonaic na scoileanna – bhí go leor imeachtaí agus lón curtha ar fáil dóibh.

On Tuesday, January 20th , the children from Rang 6 visited our local secondary schools. The boys visited Garbally College and the girls visited Ardscoil Mhuire. A wide range of activities was planned for the children by the schools. This gave the children something of a feel for what they can expect next year as they enter secondary school.

This has always been a very enjoyable and beneficial day for the children, and so it proved this year again.

The children will left school by bus at 9.20 a.m. and returned at about 2 p.m.

Information on enrolment has already been received by the pupils. For further information on registration please see the individual school’s website.

Apologies:

1. Halloween Dress-up day – Photo Booth

Ruairi thanked Fiona for organising the photo booth. It added an extra fun element to the day, was enjoyed by the children and was something that we would do again.

2. Crannchur Nollag - Christmas Raffle

Ruairi proposed that funds raised from this year’s raffle would go towards the purchase of a new reading scheme for the school and this was agreed by all.
This year’s raffle cards will have 12 lines at €2 each or 3 lines for €5. Raffle will be held on last day of term and a note will be sent to parents asking for hamper items.
Helen to draft letter to go to parents early next week.
Ruairi to organise raffle cards.
Following on from a suggestion at the AGM, we will organise to pack the hampers some evening in the school.
Proposed date for hamper packing is Tuesday, December 9th at 8.00pm. Any parent who would like to help, come along on the evening.

3. Díolachán na Nollag - Christmas Sale of Work

This will be held on Wednesday, December 17th.
Fiona has offered to run Face-painting sessions at the sale of work and will organise a few other parents to help her.
Fiona to contact Múinteoir Nicholas to arrange. .

4. Christmas Concerts

The dates for the Christmas concerts for the various classes have been available on the school website for the last few weeks.

Ruairi to publish the times of the concerts on the website early next week.

5. School Website

It was noted that the school website is a good source of information about various events and happenings at school.

6. PA Finances

Ruairi presented a note on the PA finances to the meeting and explained in detail the balance on the account, funds raised and monies spent, etc. Darren Good, the school’s accountant, is currently preparing a set of accounts and once completed these will be presented to the Board of Management.

7. Rent of School Hall

While discussing the PA finances, Ruairi mentioned that the school are receiving approx. €400 per month from rent of the halla.
If any parent knows of any group that would like to rent the halla after school hours, subject to availability, they should contact Ruairi. Rental rates are from €25 - €35 per hour.

8. Purchase of Land

There has been no update on this since the last meeting. We are still awaiting Letter of Offer from the council. The wheels are moving slowly on this.
Fund-raising for the development of the land was discussed and it was again noted that we would have to organise a separate fund-raising committee.
It was agreed to put Fund-raising for land development on Agenda for the next meeting.
Any parent who has experience of fund-raising or has fund-raising ideas are invited to come along to the meeting.
Ruairi to put a suggestion box for fund-raising ideas inside main door.

9. Communications & Attendance at PA Meetings

It was noted that any parent who wished to attend the monthly PA meetings were welcome.
The meetings are structured with an Agenda circulated a week prior to each meeting. It is not within the remit of the PA to discuss school complaints or grievances.
The proposed dates for the meetings for the remainder of the school year are below. The meetings start at 8.00pm

.....................Thursday, 15th January
.....................Thursday, 19th February
.....................Thursday, 20th March
.....................Thursday, 30th April
.....................Thursday, 28th May

Agenda items should be e-mailed to the address below at least a week prior to the meeting as good practice suggests the Agenda be circulated a week in advance.

Minutes of PA Meetings will be published on the school website.

It was suggested that we create an e-mail address for the Parents Association to communicate with parents.
The e-mail address is coistenadtuisti@eircom.net

We have a list of contact details from the AGM of parents who indicated that they would be available to help out with various events, etc. It is proposed to e-mail these parents inviting them to attend the PA meetings. We will also e-mail this group if we are looking for help, event notices and so on.
Any parent who wasn’t at the AGM and would like to be included on this list, please e-mail Helen at the PA e-mail address. coistenadtuisti@eircom.net
(When we send group e-mails, your e-mail address will not be visible to others).
We will also put a note re. the dates of PA Meetings on the notice board indicating that all parents are welcome to attend PA meetings.

10. Provision of longer mats at Entrance Doors

It was suggested that the school purchase longer mats at the entrance door as the floors can become slippy on wet mornings.
Ruairi to organise this. He has sourced larger water catcher type mats at €150 each.

11. Rainy Morning Procedure

There was a suggestion that perhaps parents and children could wait in the halla on wet mornings.
Ruairi explained this wasn’t practical for insurance, supervision and safety reasons. The whole of the halla floor would get quite wet from entering straight from outside.
It was noted that on rainy mornings, once the school gates open, children who are dropped to the gates or arrive on busses can enter the school via the back door and line-up in the corridor.
On rainy mornings parents who accompany their children should wait in their cars until the school doors open at 8.47am or if walking, should plan to arrive for 8.47am.

12. School Swimming

There was a query how children were organised into the various groups.
The procedure is that the swimming instructors ask children to go to the groups they were in at the previous set of lessons. This was the most practical from a safety point of view. Afterwards, if the instructors felt a child was in the wrong group, they move them.
It was noted that if a parent felt their child would be better suited to a different level, they should arrange to come along on the first day of swimming or contact the swimming pool directly.

13. Date for Next Meeting

Thursday, January 15th 2015 at 8.00pm

Agenda Items to be forwarded to Helen at the PA e-mail address (coistenadtuisti@eircom.net) by Wednesday, January 7th.

Crannchur na Nollag - Christmas Hamper Raffle

A Chairde,

We hope everyone is well and looking forward to the Christmas season.
It is time once again to organise our Christmas Hamper Raffle. This is usually our main fund-raiser of the year and last year’s raffle raised €2,400.

Funds raised from this year’s raffle will go towards the purchase of a new reading scheme for the school.

As usual, we are asking parents to donate something for the hampers and we would appreciate if each family could send in a tin of biscuits, sweets or chocolates, a bottle of cheer or other goodies.

Last year we received enough items to put together over 15 hampers and it would be great if we could do the same again. Please drop your hamper item(s) into the collection box inside the school entrance doors or to the office by Friday, 5th December.

Also, if anyone has any spare empty hampers, please drop them into the office.

Over the next few days we will be sending home a card of lines for each family to sell. There will be 12 lines on the card and each line will cost €2 or 3 lines for €5. If anyone would like extra cards, please contact the office. (As usual, we do not expect children to go door to door selling.) Raffle cards should be returned to the school by Wednesday, 17th December.

The raffle will take place in the halla on the last day of term (Friday, 19th December) and parents are welcome to attend. The seller of each winning line is given a selection box and there is always great excitement from the children and a great atmosphere in the halla.

Go raibh maith agat for your support

Nuachtlitir 04/11/14

Tá an téarma tosaithe agus gach duine ag obair go dian!
Déan nóta de na pointí thíos:

The term has begun and we are all back working hard!
Please note the important information below:

Gaeilge sa Scoil: Bí cinnte go n-úsáideann tú Gaeilge chomh minic agus is féidir le do pháistí. Má fheiceann siad go bhfuil ard-mheas agat ar an nGaeilge cabhróidh sé an Ghaeilge a úsáid agus a fhoghlaim ar scoil.

Irish at School – Parents please make sure and use what Irish you have as often as possible with your children. It is vitally important that you speak Irish when in or around the school. This will help your child see the respect that you have for our language and that you don’t see Irish as “Just a school thing”

Cruinnithe Tuismitheoir/Múinteoir: Mar is gnáth beidh na cruinnithe Tuismitheoir/Múinteoir ar siúl an tseachtain seo chugainn. Beidh an múinteoir i dteagmháil leat faoin am.

Parent/Teacher Meetings – As usual our Parent/Teacher Meetings will take place next week (Nov. 10-14). The class teacher will be in contact with you about your meeting time or you can contact the school office to arrange a suitable time.

French recommences 12/11/14. Swimming Rang 2/3/6 begins Friday, 07/11/14

Banc na Scoile gach Déardaoin! School Bank open every Thursday!

Ciorcal Comhrá: Bíonn Ciorcal comhrá gach Tráthnóna Dé Luain ag 7.30 i.n. agus gach Déardaoin ag 11 r.n. in Óstán Uí Ghullane. Fáilte roimh chách.

Irish Speaking Circle: A Ciorcal Comhrá takes place each Monday evening at 7.30 p.m. and Thursday Morning at 11 a.m. in Gullane’s Hotel. Everybody is welcome to attend.

A Bheith in Am: Tá sé an tábhachtach go bhfuil na páistí ar scoil in am gach lá, cuireann sé isteach ar na múinteoirí agus na páistí eile sa rang nuair a thagann daoine déanach. Mar is eol daoibh bíonn gach doras sa scoil seachas an príomh doras faoi ghlas tar-éis am oscailte.

Punctuality: It is very important that your child is at school on time, late-comers disrupt classes on the other children, and this is unfair! For reasons of security all doors except the main office door will be locked just after school starting time each morning.

Airgead Scoile: Más rud é nach bhfuil na costais scoile éalaine/ceardaíochta/cóipeáil /text/7rl íochta agat bheimíd buíoch é a fháil chomh luath agus is féidir. Tá gach airgead ag teastáil uainn chun an scoil a rith de bhur bpáistí. Déan cinnte go bhfuil an síntiúis scoile san áireamh.

Art and Crafts/School Contribution: Anyone who has still has not paid school expenses (Art/Craft/Photocopying/text/etc) are asked to do so as soon as possible. Every penny collected is used for the good of all of our children. Please make sure and contribute to the voluntary contribution also.

Please encourage your child to tell the teacher when something happens that makes them uncomfortable. Problems only arise when we don’t find out about incidents. If you as a parent know that your child is unhappy about something, please inform us straight away and we will do all in our power to rectify the situation. Please don’t have long meetings at the front gate or telephone conversations for the evening – come in and chat about it – anything else doesn’t help the situation, is negative and unhealthy and leads to an unhappy school!

Tá scoil an-sona againn – go mairfidh sí mar sin!

We have a very happy school – let’s keep it that way!

Coiste na dTuistí/ Parent’s Association

MINUTES OF MEETING
HELD ON THURSDAY, 16th OCTOBER 2014

Present:
Damien Naughton, Janice O’Grady, Ger Coughlan, Geraldine Sheran,
Ruairi O hAnnluain, Helen McCarthy, Fiona O’Flaherty, Renate Kohlmann

Apologies: Olivia Dunne

1. Halloween Events
Fiona volunteered to set up a Photo Booth on Halloween Dress-up Day (October 24th) as part of the festivities at school . Classes from Rang2 to Rang 6 would come to the Halla in groups.
It was proposed to run this from approx. 12.30pm. Photos would be printed out and displayed and would be on hard-disk if anyone wanted a copy.

Any parent available to help Fiona, come along at 12.30pm.

2. Rang 6 - Christmas Sale of Work

Ruairí mentioned this would be around the 14th/15th December (to be confirmed). Fiona said she hoped to be able to make up some Christmas Wreaths which Rang 6 could include in the sale.

3. Feedback from AGM & Cinema Night

There was a very good turn-out at the AGM and Renate had a list of name and contact details of people who indicated they would be available to help out at events, etc.

• Renate to send the list to Helen who will put it on a spreadsheet.

The cinema aspect of the evening was a great success and was eagerly looked forward to by the children. Ruairí noted that some of the children in the Junior Infant room found the evening too long and maybe next time we would have shorter movies or perhaps a Magician to provide entertainment also. It was also noted that a Cinema Night was best held as an annual event.

4. Election of Chairperson, Secretary & Treasury
Damien Naughton was elected Treasurer.
Ger Coughlan was elected Secretary.
Geraldine Sheran was elected Chairperson and indicated that she would accept the position until Christmas and review then.
Helen McCarty was elected Recorder of Minutes & Correspondence.

5. Finances
There was a discussion re. Finances.
Ruairi indicated the school had three Credit Union accounts:
.........Account for Voluntary Contribution & Fees.
.........Account for the Board of Management.
.........Account for the Parents Association.

All accounts, including the school’s current account, go through the school accountant, Darren Goode, who prepares the school accounts and attends a board meeting each year to discuss any queries that the board may have regarding the school accounts.

• Ruairí to update the next meeting on which account monies from our fundraising over the last few years are held and the balance on the account.

• Ruairi to confirm if the money from the Fun Walk went towards payment of the Line Markings.
• Damien, as Treasurer, will report on the Parent Association’s Finances at each PA Meeting – monies raised, expenses, intended use of monies etc.
Ruairi mentioned that the new fence was paid for from a grant the school received in the past (This grant has been abolished! It was reinstated last year for one year, we hope that the Minor Works Grant will be fully reinstated in the future.)

6. School Website
It was suggested that the PA have a page on the school website. Ruairi advised that a new school website is in progress and we would have a page on the new site. Helen volunteered to keep the PA page updated.

7. Tesco Fundraiser

• Ruairi to send note advising parents of this fund-raiser.

8. Update on Land

We are still awaiting Letter of Offer from the Council.
A Development Group was put in place (volunteers who attended the AGM) and they had a preliminary meeting where a range of ideas were discussed. The group needs to have another meeting to move the project forward.
• Ger Coughlan and Ruairi would report back to the next PA meeting on this.
It was suggested that there would need to be a sub-group formed to look after the area of fundraising and grants available. Funding would mainly need to come from grants if at all possible.

9. Punctuality
A concern was raised about punctuality and the locking of the door at 9.00am sharp.
Ruairi advised that there was an improvement on punctuality in general and it wasn’t a concern of staff at this time.
• Ruairi to consider the practicality of locking the door at 8.55am.

10. Parking Issues

• Renate to send a reminder letter to parents about safety/parking at school.

11. Review of Awards Ceremony
Concerns were expressed about the awards ceremony and some felt it may not promote inclusivity. Some felt that instead of being a cause for celebration, it may in fact leave some parents and children demoralised. Some saw the merit in both arguments..
It was suggested that there should be a review of the ceremony and see if there could be a way to celebrate the strengths of all the children.
Another suggestion was perhaps the awards could be opened up to include Music/Culture, Social Inclusion, Civil Works and Arts.
• Ruairi to discuss with Staff and Board and update the next meeting on their views.

12. December Events – to be discussed at November Meeting.

13. Date for November Meeting

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20TH AT 8PM

NEWSLETTER ….. NUACHTLITIR…… OCTOBER 2014
Coiste na dTuistí PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh

It was great to see so many parents attend the A.G.M. / Movie Night on Friday 26th September!

Thank you all for coming out that evening. We hope you found it informative and that you got the sense of community that we are all just trying to spend some of our time to work for the benefit of the children and for the school.

A very special Thank You to the Teachers and Gearoidín, who supervised the children for the 3 different movies - without their support we could not have pulled off this event. The children really enjoyed their evening and there was a lot of excitement in the build up to it.

For those who could not attend, here is a brief summary of the evening:

The meeting started with welcome from Ruairí Ó hAnnluain, who then handed over to a Geraldine Uí Shíoráin who gave a personal account of what it was like as a new parent, joining the school mid-stream, with two boys settling into the school and why she decided to become involved in the Coiste. Geraldine was acting Chairperson for the evening and she then handed over to the outgoing Secretary, Renate Kohlmann, for a report on the last 12 months.

The key points of the report were:

1. Thank you
....Thank you for coming here this evening and thank you to anyone who helped out in any way with the ....work of the PA over the last year. It really means a lot to get involved and to give of some of your ....precious time.

2. Last year’s Committee
....This year on the committee were Helen McCarthy, Billy Dempsey, Olivia Dunne, Mags Connerty, ....Geraldine Uí Shíoráin, Bernadette Reynolds, Janice O’Grady, Ruairí O’hAnnluain, Renate Kohlmann.

3. New to the Committee
....It was very encouraging to welcome new parents to the meetings (and indeed to see two new parents ....join this month – Damien Naughton and Ger Coughlan). Demands on time are very big for everyone ....today and so there is an understandable reluctance on people to commit to specific jobs, however, many ....people have said they would love to help out where they can. The time that our children are in school is ....very short, and getting involved in any way, not matter how small or big, can be very rewarding when ....you see the difference that it can make.

4. Meetings
....We met once a month, our first meeting in September and last meeting first week of July, and discussed ....many topics primarily about fund raising for the school to enhance the school experience for all our ....children.

5. Communication
Last year in an effort to make people aware of what was ongoing, all dates of meetings and copies of all the newsletters were posted on the school website. All newsletters were also printed and handed to each child. The notice board in the corridor was set up which can definitely be better used this year.
Despite this, we know that not everyone gets all the messages or do not feel they are a part of the workings of the PA. This is something that we do need to work on and perhaps a few evenings like this, where parents can come and also bring children, is something that could be repeated and give a better way to gain more participation. We would welcome your thoughts on this idea later.

6. Past Events
In November last year there was a lovely celebration for Carmel to which some parents went along, it was a lovely low key event which was enjoyed by all.

During November we started selling the tickets again for the Christmas hampers. Parents were very generous and donated gifts for the hampers which Helen and Linda very kindly took time out to prepare and wrap.

Christmas cards were drawn by the children and that activity seemed to be well received.
The older children took care of the Diolachan na Nollag, and although not a PA event, we were happy to support as much as possible.

We had discussed a proposed children’s art exhibition, whereby the child’s picture is framed and mounted then displayed and sold off. We all agreed it was a good idea, and the idea was to combine it with grandparent’s day. While it did not come off this year, it is one for future consideration.

A number of other ideas never made it out of the stable, but are potential future ideas (i.e. car wash, scrap metal collection, bag packing, table quiz, beetle drive).

In March we ran the Pancake Tuesday and thanks again to everyone who either brought along pancakes, home cooked or shop bought ! and especially to parents who helped on the day. It can be quite a bit of work associated with serving them to over 240 children, so many hands really do help on the day.

The Walk-a-Mile was held on Sunday 15th June, a simple idea that proved to be great fun. It was a lovely family atmosphere and we were very fortunate with the weather.

We organised the Rang 6 graduation, which is always a very moving and happy occasion at the same time.

Cosite also arranged the line markings on the playground, which are enjoyed by the children.

7. Aims of the Parents Association

This is defined by the Education Act 1998 as being – to promote the interests of the students in cooperation with the board, the principal, teachers and students, and for that purpose may advise the Principal or board on any matter relating to the school and they shall have regard to any such advice, adopt programme of activities to promote involvement of parents in consultation with the Principal, in the operation of the school. It is open to all parents.

It is not within the remit of the PA to deal with complaints of any description. Complaints process is outlined separately in the school’s complaints procedure policy.

8. Road Safety
Time was also spent discussing the safety of our children particularly where they are dropped off and collected from school and a number of reminders issued to parents. This theme has been constant over the last number or years. A number of very serious near misses have been seen and an accident here does not bear thinking about.

9. Campaign to secure the land outside the school

We first set out on this campaign back in October 2012 when the PA wrote to each and every councillor on BTC, the major and, including the Town Engineer, Kevin Kelly and the Town Clerk, Catriona Morgan.
The letter addressed the situation that we had at that time, i.e. there were no road markings, no signs, no safe pathway all the way to the school, insufficient space for parking, limited space for turning etc.
We requested a number of items to improve the area and requested that the land be considered to be transitioned over to the school. Arising from this letter, we were invited to a meeting in the Civic Offices to view a copy of the plan.

We were told there was no way that we would get the land, unless, at the final end, that we came into money. They presented a plan to us which addressed some of the issues.
After consultation with the PA, in a further letter in March, we requested some changes be made, and in the firm understanding that there was nothing else on the table, we agreed to go ahead.
Over the summer the road works were completed which were an improvement on what we had, but not a comprehensive solution.

Knowing that the Council was disbanding and that there was possibility of access to funds, we once again wrote in February 2014, respectfully requesting gifting all or some of the land, for both parking and for a facility to be developed over time.

We again were invited for a meeting and this led to a joint proposal between the PA and the Board of Management being submitted.

Proposal Summary:

Joint proposal from the Parent’s Association and the School Board of Management in relation to the unused land in front of the school.

Focussed on two primary outcomes:

1. To comprehensively address the health and safety issues outside the school in relation to the traffic flow, parking and drop off point issues.

2. To provide for a sports playing field for the children.

The issues around health and safety have been raised on a number of occasions with the Council. Over time, these issues become exacerbated, due to the growth in the school going population in the area.

Proposal Description:

A draft map has been submitted to demonstrate how the land could be used. There are 3 main elements to the plan:

1. Central to the plan is a playing field for the children to use to develop sporting activities,
2. A safe footpath so that no child would need to cross a road to gain access to the school,
3. Parking facility so that there are sufficient spaces for parking and set down.

Our proposal is for the Council to transfer this land to the school for its use over time for the children and future generations.

A great deal of work was done behind the scenes, and each and every councillor was personally called, written to and discussions had to explain the situation to them.

After much work we learned last week that our proposal was agreed at Galway Council Meeting and that an acceptance letter to our offer, is on the way to us. This is more than we could imagine and we are truly grateful to all the councillors and all the hard work that has gone in from parents attending meetings, writing letters and lobbying and making known exactly what the issues are to all councillors and finally to the councillors themselves for pushing it through.

A development group was set up that evening to work together with the Principal and the Board in designing and then seeking sponsorship and fundraising to develop the land into adequate, safe car-parking, drop off points and initially provide a playing field for our children. If you would like to get involved with this then let us know.

Huge thanks go to everyone involved to get us to this point in the history of the school !

18/09/14 AGM Coiste na dTuistí
Parents’ Association AGM

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Coiste na dTuistí will take place on Friday Evening 26/09/14 at 6.30 p.m. in the school hall.

You are a member of the parents’ Association of this school because you are a parent of this school.
The parents’ Association exists to support the school!

In the last 18 months our Parents’ Association has:
........- beautifully decorated our school yard
........- Improved our roundabout and parking
........- Have almost secured a playing pitch for the school and extra parking (Fingers crossed – Co.Co. ..........meeting next week!!!)
........- Baked and served a million pancakes
........- Collected, packaged and sold our Christmas Hampers
........- Supported our Halloween Dress-up
........- Helped with Christmas cards and Shamrocks
........- Organised and ‘Walked-A-Mile’ for the school
........- Helped out at all of our open days
........- Worked in library and with our book rental scheme
........- Organised our sixth Class Graduation ceremonies
........- Raised badly needed funds for our school

You have helped out already with many of these activities, please get more involved if you can! Your children are only here for a very short time, be as big a part of it as possible!!!

We need new blood to give a hand during the year, especially families who are new to the school.

Movie Night

Please come to our AGM/Movie Night, 6.30 p.m. on Friday 26/09/14

To help families be able to attend our AGM this year, a Movie Night is being organised for the children, which will be run by teachers from our school while the AGM takes place!
........We plan to have 3 cinemas with suitable movies for:

........- Children from Rang 3-6
........- Children from Naíonáin Bheaga to Rang 2
........- Children of Naíonra age (Movie in Naíonra)

In this way we are trying to take the baby-sitting problem which we all face out of the equation! This will hopefully free you up to attend!

It will be a lovely occasion for the children, we might even stretch to a bit of popcorn and a drink!!
All of the Association’s activities for the coming year are already mapped out, we will be repeating most of the activities that we had last year!

........We are not trying to give you a job!

........We are not trying to make your life any busier than it is!

........We want everyone to understand that the Association is of parents and for parents who want to ........support the school for the sake of their children!!!!!!!

Every association forms a committee, to work on behalf of that organisation, because all members can’t attend all meetings (We have over 300 parents in our school!)

We hope to form a new committee during or shortly after our AGM. It would be great if we had a good mix of parents from all classes on the committee!!!!!

Please come to our AGM/Movie Night, 6.30 p.m. on Friday 26/09/14

NEWSLETTER ….. NUACHTLITIR…… JUNE 2014
Coiste na dTuistí PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh

June 3rd 2104

Dia dhaoibh a Chairde!

We hope everyone is well and looking forward to the school holidays.
The Parents Association have had a busy year.

- The Christmas Hamper Raffle was our main fundraiser along with Selling Shamrock for St Patrick’s Day. Our Annual Pancake Day was greatly enjoyed by all the children. We had a very enjoyable Grandparents Day. We continue to run the Book Rental Scheme. A lot of time was spent on the potential purchase of the land adjacent to the school (see below).
- We are hoping to organise a Fun Walk before the school holidays and details will be sent out shortly.

The Parents Association committee met several times during the year and we would like to thank all parents for their help and support.

We would encourage more parents to get actively involved in the Parents Association. It is for the benefit of all our children and new faces are always more than welcome.

-‘Land Purchase’
Two years ago we spoke to the Council seeking to gain some of all of the unused land for the use of the school, to improve the safety of the area for our children. Our request was not looked upon favourably by the Council and they proposed a number of changes to improve safety – i.e. footpaths, signage and road markings. However, we have long felt that this is still insufficient to serve the needs of the growing school population. With the end of the Ballinasloe Town Council in sight, we decided to try again. Following a series of letters and a meeting with the Town Clerk and Director of Services, and with the approval of the School Board of Management, a proposal was submitted to the Town. Much work was done to contact the Councillors and lobby them as to the reasons why we are so anxious to gain this land. In the end, we gained 100% support from the Councillors! However due to the timing of the dissolution of the Council, this matter could not be concluded at the final meeting, so it will now be brought forward to be considered and agreed by newly formed Galway County Council. We take heart that it has been submitted with the full approval of Ballinasloe Town Council and as such we hope that it will be also approved. So, for now we await with much anticipation for the final outcome from Galway County Council.
We believe this unused land can be a wonderful resource to enhance the safety for our children by finally upgrading the parking and traffic management, that it could provide a super amenity / playing field for our children. Rest assured, if and when we get to that point there will be opportunity for input from all parents as to how best to develop the land, however, we would very much like to finish out our term with the agreement that this land would transfer over to the School. We believe that the acquisition of this land is of paramount importance to ensure the safety of the children of the school and to enhance their recreation facilities , for generations to come. More to follow ...

- Rang 6 Graduation - Rang 6 Graduation will take place on Wednesday, June 25th. As usual, the Parents Association will be organising refreshments - if anyone would like to drop some home baking into the school any time on the Wednesday, it would be much appreciated or if you would be available to help out on the evening, please let Renate Kohlmann (087 9685455), Janice O’Grady (087 2960051) or HelenMcCarthy (087 6964539) know. We would like to wish Rang 6 all the best as they take the big step to secondary school.

- First Communion & Confirmation - A big thank you to all the teachers involved in preparing our children for First Communion and Confirmation. They were two wonderful occasions. The School Choir were fantastic and received so many compliments, along with all the fantastic artwork on display in the Church. Well done to both teachers and children.

- Finally ‘Go Raibh Maith Agaibh’ to all the teaching staff, our principal, Ruaíri and to Gearoidín for all your support during the year.

Have a lovely summer.

Renate Kohlmann (On behalf of the Parents Association Committee)

P.S. Once again can you please take care and attention when driving to drop off or collect your children, please read and retain the safety advice on the separate page.

Talamh na scoile - Proposed Land Purchase

As you are aware, Coiste na dTuistí has been working tirelessly to improve safety and parking around the school.

• Last year they secured improvements to the roundabout outside the school

• Last week, they placed a proposal before the final meeting of Ballinasloe Town Council to purchase the land opposite the school to improve safety around the school and to provide a playing field for our children

• All members of our town council voted unanimously to sell the land to the school

• The decision of the town council will come before an early meeting of the new Galway County Council

• Many thanks to all of our outgoing councillors who all supported our school so strongly

• Special thanks to Coiste na dTuistí for pursuing this issue so vigorously on our behalf
