    Coiste / Parent’s Association - AGM

    Dia dhuit,

The AGM of our Parents Association is being held next Thursday, 23rd November at 8.00pm in our school hall.

All parents are welcome to attend and we hope as many of you as possible will come along, especially parents of new children or families joining the school.

As a parent of a pupil of Scoil Ui Cheithearnaigh, you are automatically a member of the Coiste and we are always delighted to see new faces. As it is not practical to have all parents attend all Coiste meetings, we form a committee to represent the general parent body. We are currently in the middle of the two year term. We would like to have a few more parents join, please let us know if you would be interested.

Our 2016/2018 committee members are Sinead McKeigue (Secretary), Helen McCarthy (Chairperson), Marie Caulfield, Sonya Coyne, Bernie Power, Aileen Rohan, Geraldine Sheeran, Janice O’Grady, Ger Coughlan, Caroline Moore and Ruairi O’hAnnluain.

There are lots of events throughout the school year and all parents are welcome to help out and come along where possible.

The format of our AGM will be as follows:

    1. Update from the Parents Association Committee on the past year’s events and funds raised.

    2. Acknowledgement of parents contribution to extra-curricular events within the school (sporting, clubs, school bank, library, etc).

    3. Land purchase update – Ruairi O’HAnnluain.

    4. Election of a Father’s Nominee to the Board of Management.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

    Go raibh maith agat,

    Sinead McKeigue
    Parents Association Secretary

The children perform with a full orchestra and are part of a choir of hundreds!

Because it is such a popular event, families are given the opportunity to pre-purchase Tickets (at a discounted rate) before they go on open sale.

    Bord Bainistíochta na scoile 2015 – 2019
    Board of Management 2015 - 2019

    A Thuistí,

Eamonn Casey, our fathers’ nominee to the Board of Management has stepped down from the board. We would like to thank Eamonn for his work on behalf of the school.

The patron, Bishop Kirby, has asked the chairperson of the board to arrange for the election of a replacement Fathers’ Nominee to the board of management.

The board of management has 8 members: 2 patron’s nominees; 2 teachers’ nominees; 2 parents’ nominees; 2 nominees from the community.

    Please note the following points:

    1. The election of a Fathers’ Nominee will take place on the night of the Coiste na dTuistí (Parents’ Association) AGM, which is being held on Thursday, 23/11/17.

    2. Nominations will be sought from the floor. If there is more than one nomination, an election will be held. Tellers will be appointed from the assembled parents. Counting will be carried out in public at the meeting.

    3. We are a Gaelscoil, and our meetings are held ‘as Gaeilge’, it is important that those nominated shall have a good understanding of the Irish language so that they can play a full part in board meetings. It is also expected that those nominated will have an understanding of and commitment to the ethos of the school.

    4. Please speak to anyone who you intend to nominate to ensure that he is content to be put forward.

    5. Full details of board of Management Procedures can be accessed from the news section of our school website or at

    Éadaí scoile an tsamhraidh 2017
    Summer School Uniform 2017

Tá sé go hálainn an ghrian a fheiscint agus teas a bheith ann!!!

Tá traidisiún anseo éadaí scoile an tsamhraidh a chaitheamh an t-am seo den bhliain. Mar sin is iad éadaí scoile an tsamhraidh ná:

    .......- Bríste Ghearr dúghorm.
    .......- T-léine scoile
    .......- Bróga Reatha
    .......- Geansaí Scoile spóirt

Taobh amuigh de seo ba chóir go mbeadh éadaí scoile ceart ar do pháiste gach lá.

It is wonderful to see the sun in the sky and feel its warmth on our backs! We must take advantage of the sun when we get it!

As is tradition in Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh, we can wear a summer school uniform at this time of year. Our summer school uniform consists of:

    .......- Navy shorts
    .......- School t-shirt
    .......- Runners
    .......- School tracksuit top

Please note that there is no mix and match option.

Children must wear their full school uniform or summer uniform.

Runners may be worn with summer uniforms and sports uniforms only. Black school shoes are worn with full school uniform.

Please support our school uniform policy as not doing so confuses and upsets the children, and gives the impression that our rules are there to be broken. We try to teach the children that fair rules are there for the benefit of everybody and must be respected by all for the good of society.

    Bullying, Internet Safety & Cyberbullying
    Information Workshop for Parents

Wednesday 22/03/17 at 7.30 pm in the School Hall

    Dear Parents,
Coiste na dTuistí arranged for Graham Mulhern (Education Development Executive) of BE SECURE ONLINE to present a Workshop on Social Media, Internet Safety & Cyberbullying to parents on Wednesday, March 22nd at 7.30pm.

We feel these are very relevant topics. Bullying and cyberbullying are an ever present concern for us all. There are great benefits in using the internet but there are also many risks and we need to be aware of these risks and how we can best safeguard our children.

Earlier in the day Graham will talked to our 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes.

The evening Workshop was open to parents from all classes, as well as parents from other schools in the area. There was no charge for attending the Workshop.

    Go raibh maith agat.

    The Parents’ Association Committee.

    No-Uniform Day for Daire
    Shrove Tuesday – February 28th 2017
    & Road Safety

    A Chairde,
We hope everyone is well and enjoying the brighter evenings.

    No-Uniform Day for Daire:

As you may be aware, Daire from Rang 1 has been very ill recently and has spent a lot of time in hospital, since just before Christmas.
It has been suggested that we as fellow parents and classmates could do something to show our support for Daire and his family.
It has been decided, in consultation with the school, that Coiste na dTuistí will hold a No-Uniform Day tomorrow, Wednesday, 22/02/17. All children are welcome to come to school in their own clothes, and bring a small donation (€2 has been suggested).
We all wish Daire a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in school soon!

    Shrove Tuesday – February 28th 2017
It is our tradition that parents serve pancakes at school on Shrove Tuesday to all the children in the school and in Tír na nÓg. The children look forward to this and there’s always great excitement in the school on the morning.
We need your help with this: A lot of pancakes are consumed so we would appreciate if you could make some pancakes at home and drop them into the school next Tuesday morning, February 28th. You could make them the evening before and store in the fridge or make them on the morning.
We also need parents to help out on the morning. There is quite an amount of work involved in heating and serving the pancakes. If you are available, please contact the office or put your name on the sheet just inside the school entrance door. The morning lasts from just after school drop off until around 12.30pm/1.00pm. So if you can spare an hour or more at any stage during the morning, it would be appreciated. Just let us know what time suits you best so we will know what help we have. Many hands make light work!

Rang 2 will be going to Galway to perform their drama “An Greasaí agus na Leipreacháin” on Shrove Tuesday, therefore, Rang 2 will have their pancakes on Monday!!

Road safety is constantly on our minds, especially during school drop off and collection.
Can we remind everyone to drive and park carefully when dropping and collecting. Avoid double parking and under no circumstances should anyone park on the yellow box at the entrance to the staff carpark. Please also remind your child(ren) to use the pedestrian crossing when crossing the road.
Please do not encourage your child to cross the roundabout – if children are not on the road there can’t be an accident.

    Go raibh maith agat,

    Parents Association Committee
    Coiste na dTuistí

Crannchur na Nollag - Christmas Hamper Raffle

    A Chairde,
We hope everyone is well and looking forward to the Christmas season.
It is time once again to organise our Christmas Hamper Raffle. This is usually our main fund-raiser of the year and last year’s raffle raised approx. €1,800.

Some of the funds raised from this year’s raffle will go towards revamping the flower-beds at the front of the school.

As usual, we are asking parents to donate something for the hampers and we would appreciate if each family could send in a tin of biscuits, sweets or chocolates, a bottle of cheer or other goodies. Last year we received enough items to put together over 15 hampers and it would be great if we could do the same again. Please drop your hamper item(s) into the collection box inside the school entrance doors or to the office by Friday of next week, December 9th.

Also, if anyone has any spare empty hampers, please drop them into the office.
Over the next few days we will be sending home a card of lines for each family to sell. There will be 12 lines on the card and each line will cost €2 or 3 lines for €5. If anyone would like extra cards, please contact the office. (As usual, we do not expect children to go door to door selling.) Raffle cards should be returned to the school by Monday, December 19th.

The raffle will take place in the halla on the last day of term (Thursday, December 22nd) at 9.00am and parents are welcome to attend. The seller of each winning line is given a selection box and there is always great excitement from the children and a great atmosphere in the halla.

Go raibh maith agat for your support.

    Parents’ Association Committee.

    Coiste / Parents' Association

    November 18th 2016

    Dia daoibh,
    We hope everyone is well.

As you know, the Parents' Association held their AGM recently and a committee was formed. We had our first meeting recently and one of the Agenda items was the updating of the School Website.
The current school website has a lot of useful information and contains all notices from the school, school calendar, booklists, policies, etc.

However, the website needs to be updated to make it more user friendly. Some work has already been carried out on creating a new website but it just needs to completed.

We were wondering if there are any parents who are familiar with website design that would like to volunteer some time to help with this, or know of anyone that might be in a position to help. If so, please contact Geardóin in the school office. Any assistance would be very much appreciated.
We would like to remind everyone that the Parents Association have a notice board in school (on the right hand side as you come into the school building). Here we post Minutes of our Meetings (as well as on the school website) details of the current committee, dates of meetings, etc. Over the coming weeks, we will be posting a list of events we hope to organise for the current school year and if anyone is interested in helping with any of these events, just fill your name in on appropriate box on the list.

We will be holding our annual Christmas Hamper Raffle again this year and details of this will be circulated in the next few weeks. As always, your support would be much appreciated.

No further update on the Land Purchase

    3. Update on School Website
It was suggested that we might create a Facebook Page in relation to the school while we await a school website. Ruairi expressed concerns in relation to Facebook and wishes to investigate the security issues in relation to it. In the interim, a request will be generated for a school parent’s input to creating a website, this will be put on the notice board and circulated by school text/letter.

    4. Christmas Hamper Raffle
Helen McCarthy to generate administration documents in relation to the Hamper Raffle and offered to organise again this year. A date will be arranged to pack the hampers some evening and a note will be sent to all parents inviting them to help out with this. It was mentioned at this stage on the meeting, that the school will be open on the 8th December.

    5. Revamp of Flower Beds
It was agreed that money from the Hamper Raffle and some 2016/17 activities would go towards the revamp of the school flower beds.
A discussion took place as to whether we could entertain the idea of an external company to come in and get a quotation or should we look to some local input in relation to cost of top soil, plants etc…Sonya Coyne to provide Ger Sheeran with a potential contact and Ger then to pursue this avenue.

This type of fundraiser was organised by the school in the past and was very popular. Bernie looking into this.

The possibility of organising a Sponsored Cycle was mentioned and it was decided that this might be something to include on a possible list of fundraisers for the development of the school land.

    Coiste / Parent’s Association

Caroline Moore, Marie Caulfield, Aileen Rohan, Ger Coughlan,
Sinead McKeigue, Ruairi O hAnnluainn, Helen McCarthy, Bernie Reynolds,
    Geraldine Sheeran.

    Apologies: Janice O’Grady.

The Parents Association AGM was held on Wednesday, 19th October 2016. Notice for the meeting was circulated via a specific letter, school newsletter, text and noted on the school website.

    1. Geraldine Sheeran (our outgoing Chairperson) opened the meeting by outlining how our school was a happy school and as a Parents Association, we work together as a team for the good of the school and our children.

Geraldine then gave a summary of work carried out by the Parents Association over the last two years.

A list of the amounts raised by the various fundraisers was circulated. In summary, we raised approx. Euro 5,840 in 2014/15 and approx. Euro 4,439 in 2015/16. Our fundraisers included Christmas Cards & Annuals, 6th Class Christmas Sale of Work, Christmas Hamper Raffle, Sale of Shamrocks and our Walk a Mile.

Funds raised went towards school resources, art supplies, gardening expense, playground markings, sports equipment, Heritage Course, library books, computer service & repair, ‘Aistear’ equipment for junior classes and pancake day expenses.

As well as fundraisers, we also organised Pancake Day, helped with the annual 6th Class Graduation and tea/coffees for various events. Parents also help run the School Bank and help with the School Library, including the covering of many books.

We arranged for a representative from Barnardo’s to talk to the senior class children on Internet Safety and also to talk to parents separately. Geraldine noted that it might be an idea to organise a similar talk during the coming year.

A group of parents have set up a Coderjo Club for the school which is a big success.
A parent suggested and helped to organise a Dragons Den type initiative for Rang 6 which they very much enjoyed and found informative and worthwhile.

We held our first First Communion Get Together in 2016, a group of parents organised a party for the communion children and relatives in the school hall after the First Communion Mass. It was a big success and enjoyed by all and it’s planned to hold a similar get together this coming year.

Geraldine thanked all parents involved in all these initiatives and thanked parents who have helped the school in other ways.

Suggestions are always welcome on fundraising and non-fundraising initiatives. It was noted that any parent is always welcome to help out at any event.

Geraldine expressed sympathy to all families of the school including school staff and Board of Management who have had family bereavements recently. Our thoughts are with them all.

Geraldine also congratulated Muinteoir Fiona on the arrival of her baby daughter and wished Muintoir Anna all the best in her new position in a school in Tuam.

Geraldine was thanked for her contribution as Chairperson to the Parents Association over the last two years.

    2. Parents Association Committee & Election of Posts

It was noted that while all parents are members of the Parents Association, as per Guidelines from the National Parents Council, it would not be practical for all parents to attend meetings so it was advisable to elect a committee. This was outlined in a letter sent to all parents prior to the meeting.

All parents are welcome to request items to be included on the Agenda, if they are within the remit of the PA, by contacting any member of the Parents Association Committee at least one week in advance of a meeting. Items are then passed to the Secretary for inclusion on the agenda. Contact details for all committee members will be available on the Parents Association Notice Board and the school website, along with the dates of all meetings. Minutes will be displayed on the Notice Board and published on the school website.

There were three positions for nomination – Chairperson, Secretary & Treasurer.

Helen McCarthy was nominated Chairperson and accepted the position.
Sinead McKeigue was nominated Secretary and accepted the position.

There were no nominations or volunteers for position of Treasurer. Efforts will be made to fill this position over the coming weeks.

All attendees at the meeting agreed to serve on the committee. We would like to have a few more parents on the committee and efforts will also be made in this regard over the coming weeks.

The possibility of having sub-committees was mentioned for specific fundraisers/events, where needed.

    3. Address from Ruairí (Principal)
Ruairi thanked all parents for their help and support and for all their fundraising efforts and assured us that monies were put to good use and at times needed for the day to day running of the school.
Land Purchase: Ruairi updated the meeting on the land purchase. The purchase is in the final stages but there is no time-frame available. It was noted that while the school stands on a site owned by the Department of Education, the new piece of ground will be owned by the Diocesan patron body for the beneficial use of the school.
It was noted that once the purchase is complete, there will be a need for committees/groups, separate to the Parents Association committee, to organise the development of the land and also to fundraise for the development.
Everyone involved in bringing the purchase of the land to this stage was thanked, in particular Renate Kohlmann who had the initial idea of approaching the council again and for all her work in this regard.
Flower Beds: Ruairi also suggested that we might fundraise and organise to revamp the flowerbeds in front of the school in 2016/17. At present, nothing is growing in them successfully and a revamp would add to the school’s image and character. We had talked about doing this before and it was agreed to go ahead with this initiative.
Ger Coughlan will investigate how best to go about doing this and we will discuss more at the next PA meeting.
School Website: Ruairi also mentioned that the new school website is still not in place because of time constraints/cost. It was suggested that we ask if any parent has experience in website design and could volunteer to help with the completion of our website.

    4. Plan for the coming year
We will discuss our plan for the year in more detail at our first Parents Association committee meeting.
Bernie Reynolds offered to organise the First Communion Get Together again this year.
Helen McCarthy also offered to organise this year’s Christmas Hamper Raffle.
It was suggested that when we have the plan in place we will put details on the Notice Board of each event and invite parents to put their name to any event they might like to help out with.
We will talk further at the next meeting on how to encourage parents, particularly new parents to the school to help out.
Coffee Morning on ‘Dress Up Day’, Friday, October 28th. It was decided to organise a cuppa for parents after school drop off on the 28th. All parents are welcome and we would make a special effort to encourage new parents and parents from the junior classes to come along, as well as from all other classes.

    5. Date of Parents Association Committee Meeting
Meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Thursday, November 10th.
(The possibility of having the meeting at a later time or perhaps early morning was discussed. It was decided to leave the meetings at 7.30pm for now and this can be reviewed. It was also noted that any sub-groups could meet in the morning, where practical).
    The meeting then concluded.

Note – it is essential that the Agenda be circulated a week prior to each meeting. Members are asked to contact the Secretary if there are items, within the remit of the Parents Association, to be included on the Agenda. Meetings should usually last no longer than an hour.

Coiste na dTuistí / Parents’ Association

    A Thuistí dhíl,

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Coiste na dTuistí /Parents’ Association will be on Wednesday October 19th at 7.30pm in Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh. All parents are welcome to attend and we extend a special welcome to parents of new children or families joining the school. As a parent of a pupil of Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh, you are automatically a member of the Cosite and we are always delighted to see new faces. As per National Parents’ Association guidelines, it is not practical, however, to have all parents attending all Coiste meetings. Therefore, it is advisable to form a committee of parents who volunteer to meet on a regular basis, usually every 4 to 6 weeks. The committee will represent the general parent body throughout the year.

Many parents are not in a position to commit to attending regular meetings. However, there are lots of events going on throughout the school year and all parents are invited to help out if possible. These events are a great way to meet other parents and to get involved in some fun school activities. Some, but not all, are fundraisers for the school, but all the events are very enjoyable and very worthwhile. For example, some of last year’s events were: Christmas Hamper Raffle, Pancake Day, Walk-a-Mile, First Holy Communion party, 6th Class Graduation party (Céimniú) , Coder Dojo, School book covering, School Bank.

On the evening of the AGM, nominations will be taken for the posts of Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and possibly Public Relations Officer (PRO) from the group in attendance. Nominations will also be taken for committee members.

Throughout the year, parents will be informed in advance of all upcoming Coiste meetings. Any parent who wishes to have something discussed at a Cosite meeting, can do so by contacting any member of the Coiste at least one week in advance of a schedule meeting, and if it is within the remit of the Cosite, it will be added as an agenda item and discussed at the meeting. Minutes of meetings will be published on the school web site and on school notice board. Parents are encouraged to visit the school website regularly.
The Cosite is open, transparent and supportive of all pupils, parents, the Staff and Board of Management. We look forward to and welcome your input and support throughout the coming year as we help the whole school community to maintain a warm atmosphere in which our children can thrive.

    Le gach dea ghuí,

    Bus Scoile 2016/17

    School Bus Routes 2016/17

    A Thuistí,

It has come to our attention that ‘Bus Éireann’ is looking at the viability of school bus routes all over the country.

Bus Routes that do not have 10 students will be pulled!

Once a bus route is lost it is very difficult to have it restored.

Please think about your family situation, Could you use a bus? Do you plan to use a bus at some stage in the future?

If you would like to discuss your situation, please speak to Gearóidín in the school office.

    Points of note –
........i. There is a charge for the service
........ii. There are medical card exemptions
........iii. All applications must be made online to

At present 2 Bus Éireann buses service the school:
    ........(a) Caher Cross/Ahascragh/etc.
    ........(b) Creagh/Shannonbridge Road/etc.

    Le meas,

    Ruairí Ó hAnnluain.

    Nuachtlitir 19/04/16

    A Thuistí,

Táimid coicís ar ais tar-éis na Cásca agus tá téarma an ghnóth ach os ár gcomhair!

We are now over a fortnight back at school and are looking forward to a very busy term.!!

Our CoderDojo Club computer programming club will begin on Monday next from 6p.m. to 7.30p.m. and run for 6 weeks. There has been unprecedented interest in this activity and we have 60 children on our waiting list. The first 15 names on our waiting list will make up the first session. We will continue with classes after the summer break – everyone on our waiting list will get a chance to do it!!

Many thanks to the parents who conceived, planned and will facilitate the course!

Dragon’s Den – on Thursday and Friday of this week, Rang 5 agus Rang 6 will be taking part in a Dragon’s Den type activity in conjunction with BizWorld.

BizWorld Ireland is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes entrepreneurship skills for young people. They deliver workshops in primary schools nationwide, where pupils learn about money management and enterprise in fun and creative ways.

The children will form companies, seek venture capital, negotiate deals and attempt to make as much profit as they can! Activities will include pitching ideas to local business Dragons, advertisement campaigns and market research……We are looking forward greatly to this!!!

Tuesday, March 15th , was a very important day! Every school in Ireland hoisted our national flag at mid-day. We celebrated Flag Day with the help of our children; the school orchestra; the Con Tempo String Quartet who played with our children, and Rang a Cúig/Sé who presented their proclamation for our modern Ireland to the assembled crowd!! This was a beautiful ceremony and a cup of tea was enjoyed afterwards.

The children had a céilí and a school quiz as part of our celebrations for Seachtain na Gaeilge.

As usual St. Patrick’s Day was one of our most enjoyable days of the year. Our school prepared the liturgy on the day – our choir sang most beautifully; Rang 3 presented a drama about the life of Patrick; Children from Rang 5/6 read the prayers of the faithful; Naíonáin Bheaga brought shamrocks and Irish flags to the altar, and children from Rang 4 served the mass.

In the afternoon, our school band took part in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The children dressed up as children from 1916 and played beautifully. Congratulations are also in order as we won 3rd prize in the parade!!

We are very busy on the Sporting Front, Rang 2 visited our local GAA Club for a taster Gaelic Football session with the other two schools from town on Friday – a very enjoyable day was had by all.

Rang Naíonáin Mhóra, Rang 1 agus Rang 3 began their swimming term last week.

Rang 4 have started a six-week fitness/adventure course in Cuckoo Hill!

Rang 6 began a a course of Spike Ball in conjunction with Ardscoil Mhuire today.

Our school teams have been taking part in INTO Mini 7s competitions; our school football league is just about to begin and our school mixed football team will be taking part in the Gael Linn school tournament over two days in May, in Conamara.

Our school quiz team will take part in the Garda Quiz tomorrow night in Gullane’s Hotel – guímid gach rath orthu!

Our school library - Gearóidín has begun a Bring-A-Book – Swop-A-Book activity on Friday afternoons! So far Rang 3 and Rang 4 have taken part.

Community Games Art competition – Well done to all of the children who took part in the Community Games Art competition, and a special congratulations to the many children from our school who won prizes.

Galway Simon – A tinned food drive in aid of Galway Simon Community is underway for the month of April. Please support!

First Holy Communion and Confirmation are just over the horizon - the children are preparing well for the sacraments. Rang 2 celebtated their First Confession on Wednesday last.

Road Safety - Road safety is constantly on our minds, especially during school drop off and collection. Remind your child(ren) to use the pedestrian crossing when crossing the road.

***Please do not encourage your child to cross the roundabout – if children are not on the road there can’t be an accident.***

*Please remember that if you have a question or concern about any aspect of school, please chat to us!!

*Please remember that school starts at 8.50 a.m. Late comers interrupt classes and time missed cannot be made up! 10 minutes lost a day equals 5 school days over a school year!!!

*Black shoes are to be worn with school uniform from Rang 1 – 6. Please support the school in this!!

    Le meas,

    Ruairí Ó hAnnluain.

    Céad Chomaoineach 2016
    An Chéad Chomaoineach 2016
    First Holy Communion

    A Thuistí Rang a Dó,

Tá an obair ar siúl ag na páistí agus iad ag ullmhú don Chéad Chomaoineach – táim cinnte go mbeidh an-lá againn.

Gach bhliain bailímid €10 ó thuistí Rang a Dó. Cabhraíonn sé seo linn cuid de na costasaí a bhaineann leis an lá a chlúdach – maisiú, priontáil, grianghrafadóireacht, bláthanna, busanna, 7rl.

Cuir do shíntiús isteach i gclúdach litreach agus cuir isteach chuig an oifig é ar do chéad chaoithiúlacht.

The children are working very hard preparing for their First Holy Communion – I’m sure that we will all have a great day.

Each year the school collects €10 from the parents of the First Holy Communion Class. This contribution helps us cover some of the costs associated with the day – decoration of the church, buses, printing costs, photography, flowers etc.

Please place your contribution in an envelope hand it in to the office at youearliest convenience. r

(Please note that a Communion Breakfast is being planned after the ceremony - more information to follow - it should be no more than a 30 minute get-together!)

Trí rud ag teastáil ón scoil – Please send in before Wednesday:
    1. Grianghraf Baiste – A Photo of your baptism
    2. Grianghraf Clainne. – A Family photo
    3. Coineal Baiste – Your Christening Candle

    First Holy Communion 2016

    A Thuistí, Rang a Dó,

As you are aware preparations are well under way for our First Holy Communion ceremony on Saturday Morning, May 7th.

(Our Céad Fhaoistin ceremony will take place in Creagh Church on Wednesday evening!! All families to be seated by 6.50 p.m.)

A suggestion has been made by some of the parents of Rang a Dó, that it would be nice for the children to have a Communion Breakfast (Cuppa) together after the ceremony in the school hall. This would give the children a chance to be together on their special day and it would be a chance for parents to chat together before everyone goes their separate ways.

Would your family be able attend if such a celebration was organized?

Please fill in the form below and return it tomorrow so that a decision can be made as to whether or not to proceed with planning for the event.

Crannchur na Nollag - Christmas Hamper Raffle

    A Chairde,
We hope everyone is well and looking forward to the Christmas season.
It is time once again to organise our Christmas Hamper Raffle. This is usually our main fund-raiser of the year and last year’s raffle raised over €2,000.

Some of the funds raised from this year’s raffle will go towards revamping the flower-beds at the front of the school, a library re-vamp, and towards learning resources for the children.

As usual, we are asking parents to donate something for the hampers and we would appreciate if each family could send in a tin of biscuits, sweets or chocolates, a bottle of cheer or other goodies. Last year we received enough items to put together over 15 hampers and it would be great if we could do the same again. Please drop your hamper item(s) into the collection box inside the school entrance doors or to the office by Wednesday, 9th December.

Also, if anyone has any spare empty hampers, please drop them into the office.
Over the next few days we will be sending home a card of lines for each family to sell. There will be 12 lines on the card and each line will cost €2 or 3 lines for €5. If anyone would like extra cards, please contact the office. (As usual, we do not expect children to go door to door selling.) Raffle cards should be returned to the school by Friday, 18th December.

The raffle will take place in the halla on the last day of term (Tuesday, 22nd December) at 9.00am and parents are welcome to attend. The seller of each winning line is given a selection box and there is always great excitement from the children and a great atmosphere in the halla.

Go raibh maith agat for your support.

    1. Update on PA Finances

Our Fun Walk last May raised €825.

The recent School Zoo visit was covered by the children’s 2 Euro contribution and all money received went towards paying the fee. The zoo visit was enjoyed by all the children and they were full of chat about it.

The Irish Guide Dogs Association will be visiting the school shortly to talk to the children and it is proposed to ask children to bring in 2 Euro on Dress Up Day on Friday 23rd. This will go towards a donation to the Irish Guide Dogs Association. Their visit promises to be very interesting and worthwhile.

    2. Purchase of Land

The Council have been in touch to ask for our Solicitor’s details so the process of exchanging contracts can be started. Details have been passed on. It was noted that once purchased, ownership of the land will belong to the Bishop (the same ownership as the school grounds and building).

    3. PA Fundraisers & Events for 2015/16

Fundraisers: Our main fundraiser again this year will be our Christmas Hamper Raffle along with our Fun Walk next May/June.

Pancake Day: We will also organise our annual Pancake Day on Shrove Tuesday. As usual, all help and support from parents will be most welcome.

25th Anniversary: We plan on having a small event to celebrate our 25th Anniversary. Suggestions are to place a piece of stonework outside to reflect our 25 years. We may also use the occasion to launch our new school website and if it happens around the time, to celebrate the purchase of the land opposite the school.
Flower-beds to the Front of the School: We plan on revamping the flower beds before the end of the 2015/16 school year. The soil needs to be dug out, filled with new soil and replanted. It was suggested that funds raised from the Christmas Hamper Raffle go towards covering costs.

We will be asking for parents to help and if anyone knows the best way of going about this, please let us know. All advice most welcome!

Flags for Schools Initiative: To commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising, the Government has tasked Oglaigh na hEireann with delivering a National Flag to every Primary School in the country. The National Flag will formally be presented to the school in a special ceremony.
We haven’t yet received a date for our school and depending on the date/time, parents may be invited along to the ceremony and we will organise a cup of tea for parents afterwards.
Ruairi to let us know when he receives the date.

    4. Parents Nominees to the Board of Management
The current term of the Board of Management ends on November 30th. Parents will shortly be asked to nominate two parents who would like to be put forward for election. It’s a four year term and meetings are conducted through Irish.
Ruairi will be circulating a letter to all parents explaining the role and election process.

    5. Road Safety

It was suggested that teachers give a short talk to the children on road safety outside the school gates and to remind them to go straight to the nearest footpath when exiting cars and if they need to cross the road, to cross at the pedestrian crossing. This might involve some role playing in road safety outside the school gates. It was also suggested that the school consider a walk/cycle to school initiative.

Ruairi to talk to the teachers re the above.

Parents are asked to remind their children to only cross at the pedestrian crossing and also that parents themselves take care and be mindful of pedestrians and other cars when parking, dropping or collecting children at school.

    6. School Bank
Olivia Dunne and Helen McCarthy have volunteered to take over the running of the School Bank/Credit Union scheme.
A big go raibh maith agat to Irene Guinean for looking after the running of the scheme so well for the last number of years.

    7. Date of next meeting
    Thursday, November 19th at 7.30pm
Agenda items to be e-mailed to Helen at at least a week prior to the meeting.
